Polar Vortex
Polar Vortex (PV) is NCU’s *Woman-Matching **Ultimate Frisbee team. Founded in 2025 we are still growing, and any Woman Matching Player (WMP) of any experience level (even none) is welcome!
If you are looking for an opportunity to get out of the house and connect with other WMPs, PV is the place for you! NCUs three other club teams practice twice a week, and participate in four tournaments per year. As PV is a new team, the players will determine how often we practice. Our goal this year is to attend one tournament (Club Sectionals in September).
We know childcare can be a huge setback for many WMPs looking to participate in new activities. As a team led by a mother, we made it our priority to create an environment where parents are included. PV was granted $500 to fund a childwatch program for the summer, making practices and tournaments more accessible for parents!
If you have any questions, or are interested in learning more please reach out to us at [email protected]
We can’t wait to hear from you!
*What does Woman-Matching mean?
WMP is the term used to describe defensive match ups, not gender identity. This term is meant to be used as a functional, on-field designation and refers to how a player chooses to be matched for a given point, not a binary or definitive label of gender identity. Anyone can be a WMP, and PV welcomes everyone of any gender identity.
**What is Ultimate Frisbee?
Ultimate is a non-contact, self-refereed team sport played with a flying disc frisbee. It is not that sport you see people playing with the baskets at Chestnut Ridge, that’s disc golf. The aim of the game – Two teams of seven players compete on a playing field about the same length as a football field, but narrower. At each end of the playing field there is an end zone. Each team defends one end zone. They score a goal if one of their players catches the disc in the opposite end zone.
The player with the disc is called the thrower. The thrower may not run with the disc. Instead they move the disc by passing to team-mates in any direction.
The defensive team gets possession of the disc if an offensive team’s throw is not caught by a player of the same team. Then the defensive team becomes the offensive team and can try to score in the opposite end zone.
